Position Summary/ PRN
Basic Function and Overview:
A Polysomnographic Technologist works under the general supervision of the Medical Director (MD, PhD, DO) or designee to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders. This may involve Polysomnography, diagnostic and therapeutic services or patient care and education. A Polysomnographic Technologist can perform the duties of a Polysomnographic Technician and may provide supervision of other staff.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and talk to hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job included close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
In the performance of this job, the employee may be exposed to chemical vapors such as colodian or acetone. There may also be skin contact with these substances. The employee may also be exposed to infectious agents including blood-borne pathogens.
Requires observation of and rapid reaction to changeable operations/patient conditions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Follow Department Operating Procedures and Procedural Protocols to ensure the collection of appropriate data.
Perform data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are kept artifact-free.
Perform sleep stage, arousal and all clinical events scoring during data acquisition.
Liberally document observations and relative clinical events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of results.
Implement and perform appropriate interventions such as in those necessary for patient safety or PAP titrations.
Remove electrodes and sensors and appropriately clean according to Department Operating Procedures for patient hookup and cleaning.
Oversees and performs difficult and unusual procedures and therapeutic interventions.
Perform the complete and final score of sleep studies that are performed by Trainee’s and Technicians, when necessary.
Perform accurate and representative report generation for professional review.
Demonstrate the ability to analyze complex situations and apply procedures and policies.
Testing Preparation Procedures:
Prepare and calibrate equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning.
Apply electrodes and sensors according to Department Operating Procedures for patient hookup.
Perform appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signal deflection and recognition.
During titration studies, perform routine positive airway pressure (PAP) mask fitting and desensitization prior to starting.
Gather and Analyze Patient Information:
Collect, analyze and integrate patient information in order to identify and meet the patient-specific needs relating to physical/mental limitations, current emotional/physiological status regarding the testing procedure and pertinent medical/social history, and to determine final testing parameters/procedures in conjunction with the ordering.
Participate in the care and complex maintenance of all sleep equipment.
Participate in the inventory and ordering of medical supplies.
Participate in the organization and cleanliness of the sleep disorder center.
Participate in the scheduled department and/or technical meetings and/or conferences
Demonstrated knowledge, skills and competencies of departmental procedures and protocols.
Help establish, evaluate and maintain department operational procedures and protocols.
Participate in one or more of the department Committees
Perform the functions of a Lead Technologist as defined and needed by the department
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Licenses & certifications
Certified in CPR or BCLS
PEERS or PALS Certification
Registered by the Board or Polysomnographic Technologists (RPSGT)
Registered by the Board or Polysomnographic Technologists (RPSGT) with at least 2 years of experience as a Polysomnographic Technician and/or Polysomnographic Technologist with documented proficiency in all required competencies, such as standard polysomnographic procedures and protocols as well as sleep stage and arousal, respiratory, PLM and EKG event scoring.
Specific knowledge, skills, and abilities
Current registry by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) with documented proficiency in all required competencies, such as standard polysomnographic procedures and protocols as well as sleep stage and arousal, respiratory, PLM and EKG event scoring.
Must obtain PEERS or PALS Certification within 1 year of being hired, if not at the time of hiring.
